报告摘要：

  This talk is about a paper dedicated to Juraj Hromkovic on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Juraj Hromkovic discusses in his book "Algorithmic Adventures" the notion of infinity. The title of Chapter 3 is "Infinity Is Not Equal to Infinity, or Why Infinity Is Infinitely Important in Computer Science." This Chapter has inspired me to also think about infinity. Infinity is indeed important mathematics and computer science. However, computer is a finite machine. It can represent only a finite set of numbers and an algorithm cannot run forever. Nevertheless we are able to deal with infinity and compute limits on the computer as we will show.

报告人简介：

  Walter Gander教授是苏黎世联邦理工学院计算机科学系荣休教授，自1987年起在该系任教，1991年晋升为正教授。他是ETH计算机科学系的早期建设者之一，曾于1989年至1997年担任科学计算研究所所长，1990至1992年担任计算机科学系主任，1997至2001年任系主任及教学主管。此外，他曾担任瑞士国家超级计算机评估委员会主席，成功促成了瑞士国家超级计算中心的建立及首台国家级超级计算机的引入。他在科学计算、数值线性代数与并行计算等领域成果丰硕，发表学术论文70余篇，出版专著7部。2002年被选为巴伐利亚科学院通讯院士，2007年当选为瑞士工程科学院院士。
